| you say goodbye and i say hello |

hey everyone! back from my internet vacation. it was oddly difficult at first, which just proves that i should try to run away from my computer more often, haha.
i'm here to announce that from now on, i'll have moved over to deerthing as my new account. i've been on this one since i first learned of lj, and five hundred entries and one university degree later, here we are. i felt like i needed a fresh start, and i was tired with more than my old username. from when my inability to spell my own name was the most hilarious thing ever.
...okay, i lied, it's still pretty funny.
i'm re-adding most of you! please friend me back! i'd miss reading your naughty f-locked posts, haha.

i think i'm going to take an internet/computer vacation for two or three weeks. it'll be hard not to use my computer at all, really, because i write and colour things on it, but i do need a break. so i won't be on ichat/AIM for a while, i won't be checking e-mails, and i won't be staring at this stupid screen for hours on end every day. instead i'll be working, filling pages of my sketchbook, going for runs, reading things, and probably playing pokemon XD
if anything comes up, you can leave me a nasty message here. <3

what i'm eating for brekkers: six arrowroot biscuits and a can of v8 i left in the fridge last night, because i'm too lazy to crawl downstairs for a new loaf of bread. ahahahah wow i am amazing. C:<
TWO DAYS OFF ;-; i'm so happy. it's nine o'clock and i'm doing fuck all, and it feels so good. i have plans to write or draw today. all in all, pretty damn good.
and darcy apparently wants to eat the stack of books on the floor beside her, and hates me because i keep interfering. |

i'm listening to a song called 'cosa nostra funk' by format:B (which is awesome), and it reminded me that i need to do research. RESEARCH. and so i call upon you, dearest friends, bosom buddies, et cetera et cetera, to recommend me any books (fiction or non-)/ websites that are not wikipedia/ movies/ general historical figures pertaining to the mob, the mafia, whichever group catches your fancy. i am aching to learn more about gangs. (and anything about seventies culture that isn't DISCO would be lovely, as well.) holy cow if anyone has any recommendations or ideas, i love you forever.
and oddly enough this fascination wasn't even inspired by the new johnny depp movie, so hah. HAH.
(what i really really need is some good solid references for men's suits and fashions through the years following the 50's. goddamn it, internet, when did you become so difficult to research with.)
also: the new MSI album is ridiculously entertaining. go listen to 'issues' and 'get it up' and tell me otherwise, GO. |

| WATCH ME MEME |
[Feb. 19th, 2009|04:50 pm] |
SO HERE IS A MEME FROM OUR GOOD FRIEND lupie_stardust IN WHICH ONE COMMENTS AND RECEIVES FIVE SUBJECTS/THINGS THAT REMIND THE POSTER OF THE COMMENTER. THE COMMENTER THEN MAKES THEIR OWN POST ELABORATING UPON EACH THING. THESE ARE WHAT I GOT FROM LUPIE MMKAY. I HURT YOUR EYES WITH MY MAGICAL CAPSLOCK.
TWIDDLY PATTERNS: patterns are frigging ace, guys. it is fact that, while not outright obsessive-compulsive, april is LOONY for making sure everything is straightened out and perpendicular and parallel to all other objects/surfaces touching it, for example my laptop:my printer:my desk:my wall. it aggravates me when i look at a tiled wall and see just ONE crooked tile because i can't do a thing to correct it. sad and lame BUT TRUE. sooooo patterns. patterns are nice and distracting. symmetry is soothing. i like walls of repetitive designs. especially when they get busy. really intricate patterns that somehow remain perfectly symmetrical? AWESOMMMME. drawing patterns is also very fun, and something i've been trying to do more of lately :D
BUNNIES: I LOEV THEM D: i had a lot of bunny-themed things throughout my life for some reason... i think every relative i ever had just took one look at me and decided BUNNIES, FOR EVERY CHRISTMAS AND BIRTHDAY EVER, THAT'LL WORK. also, when you think of it they're pretty weird-lookin little fuzzballs.
MONSTERS: ...I LOEV THEM TOO D: you all know the kid who, while being forced to read beowulf in class, sympathizes with grendel for no apparent reason other than he's a big hideous troll? yeah, that'd be me. THEY ARE FASCINATING A'IGHT. also, making up beasties = FUN TIMES.
BLUE: gghhf. haha, well. certain colours instantly lift my mood, and blue happens to be at the very top of that list. 'electric' blues, especially. i've been known to select purchases based on what shade of blue the blinking LED displays are... lapis lazuli, foil-under-glass jewelry, the sky on a clear day, my current betta fish jimmy... DO NOT JUDGE ME, I AM MAGPIE, HEAR ME SQUAWK.
BRITISH ACCENTS: I HAVE NO IDEA, SEEING AS I AM NOT BRITISH AND NEVER WILL BE. but i find them fascinating because they are foreign accents! and half my university professors are really amazingly british for some reason. my accent, on the other hand, is apparently a little more like 'fargo'.
COMMENT IF YA WANNA, S'COOL. |

| | strauss - blue danube waltz | ] | HAY GUYS. today i will share with you my reaction to and/or thoughts on that classic piece of science fiction film, 2001: a space odyssey. for, as i'm sure you are all well aware, i like to make use of the university library to watch "old" movies and find out just what the big fuss is all about.
2001 was... not what i expected, in several ways.
1. all that strauss? oh man. oh MAN. i don't know, but somehow sticking a WHOLE WALTZ into the background of your movie will make me very very very happy. and what a piece to choose, for all those twirling space stations/ ships/ THINGS. so, yay, awesome use of music, A++ would listen again, etc.
2. i have no idea what the hell was up with that LSD trip for the last TEN MINUTES of the movie (fifteen, if you count the stuff that happens after all the whacky epilepsy-lights-of-the-apocalypse). i'm all for some trippiness, but it was terrifying and confusing. which is probably why i will never do anything harder than tylenol. ...i even did some research, so i could better understand what was going ON in retrospect... still kind of baffled. and oh, what joy, to be sucked into a black hole and come out the other end as a gigantic floating fetus. maybe i'm just not cut out for deep abstract filmmaking.
3. HAL 9000, i love you. i think he was the best part of the whole thing (apart from the rabid men in gorilla suits throwing rocks at one another). the movie was over as soon as HAL got disconnected, really; right after he's kaputski we get the epilepsy-lightshow-of-I-CAN-SEE-FOREVER and then MAGICAL FETUS. ...but anyway, HAL. after doing some MORE research i learned that HAL's malfunction was caused by a major discrepancy between his two tasks: to make the trip to jupiter a successful one, but to keep the true purpose of the trip to jupiter a Total Secret from the crew until they reached the place. apparently HAL started to develop paranoia because he couldn't keep the two tasks perfectly straight (and apparently he's restarted in the sequel, which i'm debating on checking out, but... HAL IS IN IT). this, along with his confessing his feelings and begging not to be shut down, makes HAL the computer program more human than his costars, who are all monotone and no-nonsense-no-emotion and argh. ...i was half-rooting for the computer by that point.
4. very few films now will even try to draw out a simple scene of 'i'm going out there to grab something, i'll be right back' into a ten-minute sequence of extremely careful movement and extremely loud breathing noises. i don't know whether i'm painfully impatient or whether this could have been 'done better', but seriously, you do not need to take that long in a scene that isn't meant to build up suspense. if this hadn't happened after every scene with minor dialogue, the movie would have been one hour long.
5. which brings me to my one major complaint: nothing really happened in the movie. the storyline with HAL in the middle was probably the most complex and, er, interactive? let me see if i can summarize: the movie has maybe six major scenes in it. the dawn of man (read: gorilla suits!); SUDDENLY, OUTER SPACE (aka watch the pretty space stations twirl); STRANGE MONOLITH HELLO; politicians and astronauts have brunch together; trip to jupiter, OMG OUR SHIP IS HOMICIDALLY PARANOID; and lightshow-of-epileptic-doom-and-fetuses.
so... thumbs up for HAL and johann strauss (and the gorilla suits), but thumbs down for most of the rest of the movie.
next time, the shining, if i ever feel like trying to sound smart and obnoxiously opinionated again.
(i'm almost inclined to finding the book 2001 was based on, since i've heard it made more sense. i like it when my sci-fi is vaguely coherent.)
PS- you know what would make me super super happy? if i could find a dvd copy of 'the brothers quay collection' ANYWHERE. i would be super super happy. oh god, my school has it. street of crocodiles in PERFECTLY CRISP UN-YOUTUBED FOCUS, you have no idea how amazing that was. :C i... i kind of need that dvd now. and it is nowhere. |
